Neil Diamond: The Story Of My Life

Thank you to Richard Jones who contributed his favourite five farewell pieces. Richard has a sentimental streak, and wants the songs on this playlist to tell the story of his life.

The Story of My Life: Neil Diamond

I'm a great Neil Diamond fan, and this is one of his most sincere love songs. I want people to know how important love is in my life.

The Story of My Life: Marty Robbins

It starts with jaunty whistle, and is a happy song about love, breaking up, making up, and then getting married...'so the story of my life can start and end with you'. And it ends with the whistle too.

Up The Ladder to the Roof: The Supremes

I'm a Motown fan, and this is an unrecognised classic, but as it was after Diana Ross had left, they didn't market it very well. 'On the roof we'll feel closer to heaven'. Builds to a nice climax.

Cloud Nine: The Temptations

Another Motown classic...The singer, having had the worse start in life, consoles himself by getting stoned. He's on 'Cloud Nine... no responsibility...a million miles from reality.' Could be worse places to go when I move on.

The Tracks of My Tears: Aretha Franklin

My life has had it's bad times, hurt in love too often. You can hear the pain in Aretha's treatment of the Smokey Robinson classic. Aretha makes it her song, helped by a fantastic arrangement by Arif Mardin. It's from an album called Soul 69, and if there is a heaven, this album would be playing loud and often.
