Vocal funeral music

Barry Macdonald, presenter of a classical music programme on Rocket FM, selects ten vocal pieces that are suitable for funeral music.

These songs, ideal as memorable music at the funeral, will be too demanding for most choirs. It is recommended therefore that you select a recording of the song. Below are YouTube clips but you can research the version you wish played at the event.

The funeral director will inform the crematorium or celebrant, or you can do this yourself.

Faure: Requiem -  Pie Jesu

Schubert: Ave Maria

Puccini: Turandot - Nessun Dorma

Richard Strauss:

The 4 Last Songs – 4th song: Im Abendrot

Blow the Wind Southerly - Traditional arr. Whittaker

Tavener: Song for Athene

Allegri: Miserere

Elgar: Dream of Gerontius -  The Angel’s Farewell

Wagner: Tristan and Isolde -  Liebestod (“Mild und leise wie er lachelt”)

Dvorak: Rusalka – “Song to the Moon”
