Ten glorious funeral hymns

Jonathan Shepherd contributes his favourite ten hymns that are appropriate for funerals.

Abide With Me

Makes me think of the Wembley F.A. Cup Final Crowd.

Amazing Grace

Possibly my Methodist upbringing makes this such a special hymn for me.

Be Thou My Vision

St. Patrick I think. If so need I say more?

Blessed Assurance

As someone who has suffered anxiety, this is really reassuring!

I Heard The Voice Of Jesus Say

Well this cannot be argued with at all, one must do as one is told by the Lord!

Thine Be The Glory (A toi la gloire)

A lovely rousing hymn. This clip is when St. Mary's, Shortlands (Church of England) joined with St. Francis of Assisi, Douai (Roman Catholic).

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

Charles Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church with his brother John, was a prolific writer of fine hymns. This is one of his best.

Here I Am Lord

A justly popular modern hymn, ideally suited to a funeral service, written by Daniel L Schutte.

The refrain: ‘Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?/I have heard you calling in the night/.I will go, Lord, if you lead me./I will hold your people in my heart.’

Lord, Make Me An instrument Of Thy Peace

The prayer of St. Francis of Assisi set to music by John Rutter to make an exquisite hymn which has a lot of meaning appropriate to the funeral of a Christian. It’s not particularly well known and will require a well trained and good quality choir.

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

Less a hymn than a spiritual which is loved by England Rugby Union followers. And very easy for the gathered mourners to sing along to.

This clip features the amazing voice of Johnny Mathis, but there are other lovely treatments on YouTube, including this one by Marion Williams.
